The Beauty of Full Grain Leather

THE BEAUTY OF FULL GRAIN LEATHER

Full grain leather is the strongest and most durable leather available. Full grain leather means you are getting the full hide, including the strongest layer, the top layer.

Every hide has unique markings that tell a story, making each of my pieces unique. No two product will look exactly the same. That is the beauty of leather. Those markings are on the top layer. When full grain leather is split down to make it a different thickness, the proper way is to split it from the back of the hide, so it doesn't weaken the hide.

Rather than wearing out over time, your full grain leather will naturally patina and condition with use.

If you are like me, for years I thought when I was purchasing genuine leather that it was a great product. I was very wrong. Genuine leather is a catchall term for anything that is technically leather. Genuine leather has had its top layer stripped down, sanded and treated with unnatural products, so all the pieces look the same in department stores. This process weakens the product. Genuine leather can include all types of animal hides, including pig, goat, etc. If an item is made with the discarded scraps of a hide, it can also be labeled as genuine leather. I am sure you can think of a genuine leather item you purchased that did not age well. You may also recall that the genuine leather piece did not have that wonderful leather smell.

VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER (VEG TAN)

Veg-tanned leather tanned using natural tannins, from organic materials like tree bark and vegetable matter. It’s the oldest and most traditional form of tanning.

LEATHER AVAILABILITY

If a leather is not available at the time, another leather can be suggested that is similar. Availability of leather varies depending on demand and supply. Leathers can sometimes take weeks to be delivered.
