Caring for Leather

CARING FOR LEATHER

Before shipping your item, I protect each piece with all natural products, like Smith's Leather Balm. The more you love and care for your item, the longer it will last. I have included some basic information for your reference.

GENERAL CARE

  • Avoid salt and water. Water tends to darken the leather and compromise softness. When combined with salt, the item can begin to deteriorate if not cleaned promptly. Salt can even leave a ridge on the leather's surface.
  • Avoid overfilling your wallets and handbags. Once stretched, items will not return to their original shape.
  • You can wipe down leather with a very soft, lightly damp cloth
  • Do not use household soaps or cleaning products. They can damage your leather goods.
  • If needed, you can purchase Saddle Soap on Amazon. Follow the instructions.
  • Let the leather air dry. Do NOT apply heat. Heat can dry out the leather.
  • Keep leather in cool, dry place when not in use. Extended exposure to the sun can dry out the leather causing it to become brittle.
  • Condition every 6 months to keep item protected and moisturized.

SCRATCHES/STAINS

If you notice a small scratch or stain, resist the urge to treat or clean. Most minor scratches and stains become less noticeable and add to the character of your piece.

For larger stains or spills, clean with a product designed to treat full grain leather, like Saddle Soap.

PROTECT/CONDITION

The more you carry and enjoy your piece you may notice areas become dry. This is most common on the corners of bags or the indents on your favorite belt or wallet. Give your piece a little TLC with a leather conditioner. You can most likely find Fiebings Leather Conditioner at your local craft store. I highly recommend Smith's Leather Balm which you can purchase online. It is an all-natural product made in Maine. It only contains 3 ingredients and I promise you that you will LOVE the results. You can use Smith's Leather balm to protect your new item and to condition your treasured, worn pieces.
